The Historic Wilma Theater

The Wilma theater, crown jewel of downtown Missoula and western Montana for entertainment and the arts.

Built in 1921 along the bank of the Clark Fork River the Wilma building has a long and colorful history. Commonly called the “Showplace of Montana,” the eight-story building was constructed by William “Billy” Simons, an early western entrepreneur who produced Wild West shows and built theaters in Oregon, Idaho, and Alaska during the Gold Rush.

The building was the first modern steel-framed skyscraper built in Missoula and at the grand opening, the main floor theater was dedicated to his wife, Edna Wilma, a famous light opera star who performed on the Pantages vaudeville circuit. Today the Wilma building, with its 1,065 seat Louis XIV-style theater, remains a Missoula icon.

The theatre is a beautifully ornate Louis XIV style design. The main auditorium seats 1,065 patrons in red, well-cushioned chairs and regardless of whether patrons came to see a documentary film, a nationally touring rock band or the ballet, there is plenty to see long before the show ever starts. The hand-painted ceiling is the largest of it’s kind in the state and elaborate decoration and trimming is found along the walls, balconies, lobby, and stairwells.

The entryway is flanked with black Italian marble walls. The open staircases leading to the balcony and restrooms have a bold brown and gold pattern that engages the senses while exuding luxury of a bygone time.

Home Prices Still Falling

Federal Housing Finance Agency

The latest news on the home front is that prices are still dropping.

The S&P Case Shiller Index is still trending down. Banks have backed off on foreclosures and interest rates remain low but still prices continue to deflate.

Here is the most recent report from the Federal Housing Finance Agency.

In Missoula, 30% of home sales so far this year have been cash sales.
